Shanti, pronounced like Shahn-tee, is a word from the ancient Indian language of Sanskrit, and it means peace or tranquility.
In our lives, it’s natural to feel like we are not at peace or as if there is no time to have a calm mind, especially at a time like this. Together, we can bring back a state of clarity and calmness.
I am board certified in both General (Adult) Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and I truly enjoy the privilege of doing what I do day to day. At this time, I'm only seeing children and adolescents who are younger than 18, since the need for providers for them in our community is so high. My goal is to bring some tranquility to the lives of my clients.
My approach comes from years of experience, and the care I provide involves parents/guardians as key partners.
Although I am not trained in integrative medicine, I practice a holistic approach that starts with understanding the whole person, as there are many factors to consider within a path to wellness.
As a medical doctor, my practice is based on science and evidence. Medications may be used along with other supports. However, careful decisions are made around their use, and sometimes they may not be needed.
There is no short cut or a quick fix, and I will spend the necessary time to partner with you and your child/adolescent to develop solutions to meet your needs.
A thorough 2- part evaluation is conducted for children and adolescents. The first part is a 90 minute visit, which includes both the parent and child/adolescent. A detailed review of the background history and presenting issues will be gathered. Additional tests may be ordered after the first appointment if needed. The second part of the evaluation is a 45-minute appointment, which also incudes the parent and child/adolescent. At that time, the evaluation will be completed and information about possible diagnoses and recommendations will be offered.
Please note that medications may not be prescribed for every client, and they may not be prescribed at the first appointment. At the end of the evaluation sessions, it will be determined whether the child/adolescent needs medication and whether or not the client can be seen for ongoing services at this clinic. If the client cannot be treated in this clinic, other recommendations will be provided.
Once a client is evaluated, they may need routine appointments for medication management only, and these appointments are 25 minutes in length. If longer than 25-minute sessions are needed based on the intensity of the issues, then future appointments will be scheduled for 45 minutes.
Evaluations for consultation are available to parents and to other professionals when there is a question or concern about what is going on in treatment, or when someone is seeking a second opinion about the diagnosis, any treatment recommendations, or medications.
Dr. Mahajan may be able to see a client who needs individual therapy in addition to medication management if she’s able to provide the type of therapy that is needed. In that case, the appointments will be 45 minutes in length and would be scheduled at a frequency of once a week or every other week based on the intensity of the issues being addressed.
If the type of therapy that is needed is not something that can be provided at this clinic, then your child/adolescent will be referred to other resources.
No, this clinic is out-of-network for all health care plans. An invoice will be provided for you to seek reimbursement for any out-of-network benefits through your insurance company. This clinic has a business account with the Reimbursify phone app, which allows clients to file their claims securely and without any charge through the app. You will be given additional information after scheduling an appointment.
Please note that this clinic does not serve any clients with Medicare, so clients with Medicare will need to seek services elsewhere.
Payment for appointments are due at the time of service. At this time, payments are accepted via either cash or credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover).
Clients are expected to come to appointments as recommended, otherwise, the appropriate level of care cannot be provided. If you and your child/adolescent are not able to attend appointments as recommend, then it may be best to seek care elsewhere.
The appointment that is scheduled for your child/adolescent is time that is being held for them, and this clinic does not double book clients. Any missed appointments or any appointments cancelled within 48 business hours of the scheduled appointment will be charged the full amount of the visit on your credit card.
If your child/adolescent is in a crisis, such as having thoughts or behaviors related to self-harm, suicidal, or homicidal thoughts, then you need to seek emergency help right away by calling 911 or going to the nearest emergency room. If there are thoughts about suicide or self-harm, you may also call 988 or 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or text 741741 or call NJ’s Hope Line at 855-654-6735. Please ask your child/adolescent to add these phone numbers to their cell phones.
While this clinic is concerned about any emergencies, please do not call the office line to request an appointment for an emergency. This office is not meant to handle emergency situations and office hours are limited. If you are going to an ER, then you should call the office to let us know that so that the doctor can coordinate care with the ER.
After hour phone calls are only for unexpected medication reactions or situations in which someone is unclear if it is an emergency. Any emergencies should be managed as above.
Prescription refills should be requested during routine appointments. If prescription refills are requested outside of appointment times, a phone call should be made to the office during the hours of Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm. Any prescriptions that are refilled outside of routine appointments will incur a $15 fee for most medications and $25 for a controlled substance, due to the additional time required to review the request.
